The festive season is the perfect time to pause, get together with your loved ones, and enjoy films that bring warmth and a touch of nostalgia.
Christmas films are great for sparking conversations and reminding you of the magic of the period.
Whether you prefer heartwarming tales, family comedies, or timeless classics, there’s a Christmas film for every generation to enjoy together.
Continue reading to discover 10 popular choices to watch with your family this year.
1. Miracle on 34th Street
This 1947 classic follows Kris Kringle, an older man hired to play Santa at Macy’s after the original actor was found drunk.
Kris insists he’s the real Father Christmas, something that delights the children but worries the stressed adults.
When his sanity is questioned in court, the film becomes more about belief and kindness. While it has aged, the film still feels warm without being overly cheesy.
2. The Nightmare Before Christmas
Jack Skellington, the king of Halloween Town, stumbles into the world of Christmas and decides he wants to run it himself.
His attempts to improve Christmas with strange toys and a kidnapped Santa go as well as you’d expect.
The film perfectly blends dark humour and memorable songs, making it ideal for children who enjoy Christmas films with a quirky twist.
3. It’s a Wonderful Life
In It’s a Wonderful Life, George Bailey has spent his life helping others, often at the expense of his own dreams.
On Christmas Eve, he’s pushed to the edge and wonders whether the world would be better off without him.
That is, until an angel shows him what this world would look like.
While this film might sound heavy, it perfectly shows how the small, everyday choices people make shape others’ lives. This almost guarantees a reflective conversation with your family after a viewing.
4. Gremlins
Gremlins follows the story of Billy, who receives a mysterious creature called a Mogwai for Christmas. He’s given three simple rules:
- Keep it out of sunlight
- Don’t get it wet
- Never feed it after midnight.
Of course, he quickly breaks all three rules, and chaos ensues from the Gremlins.
The film is as funny as it can be terrifying, making it a perfect pick if you have older children who prefer Christmas movies with a twist.
5. Elf
When Buddy, a human raised as an elf at the North Pole, discovers he was adopted, he heads to New York City to find his real father.
He arrives believing everyone should be carolling and sharing his enthusiasm for Christmas, but of course, they don’t.
Watching Will Ferrell (as Buddy) navigate everyday human life is guaranteed to have you laughing, but at its core, Buddy’s attempts to build a relationship with his dad are incredibly touching.
6. A Christmas Carol
There are countless adaptations of Dickens’ famous tale, but the one that might initially come to mind is the animated 2009 version starring Jim Carrey.
The plot follows Ebenezer Scrooge – a man as grumpy as he is stingy – who is visited by three spirits on Christmas Eve to show him his past, present, and potential future.
Even though the story is mysterious and has its fair share of scares, it still has a deep message about generosity and second chances.
7. The Muppet Christmas Carol
For a more light-hearted take on Scrooge’s story, The Muppet Christmas Carol is exactly what you’re looking for.
The film is filled with charm, catchy songs, and self-aware humour, making it perfect for any generation.
Indeed, children can enjoy the characters while adults can delight in the underlying jokes, both of which have helped cement the film as a timeless classic.
8. Love Actually
Set during the run-up to Christmas, Love Actually jumps between several love stories (as the name might imply).
From the Prime Minister falling for a member of staff to a young boy learning the drums to impress his classmate, the film perfectly mixes sweetness and humour.
It has a star-studded cast, too, which makes for a highly entertaining watch on Christmas.
9. Bad Santa
Bad Santa definitely isn’t a film for younger children, but if you have older ones, it’s certainly funny.
Billy Bob Thornton plays Willie, a heavy-drinking conman who acts as Santa in a shopping centre so he can rob it afterwards.
His plans quickly unravel when he unexpectedly forms a bond with a lonely boy who doesn’t see anything bad in him.
While crude at times, the film still manages to be surprisingly touching, ideal if you want something different this year.
10. Joyeux Noël
Based on the true story of the 1914 Christmas truce, Joyeux Noël follows French, German, and Scottish soldiers who lay down their arms on Christmas Eve to share songs and food.
It’s highly moving without being overly sentimental, showing that humanity can appear even in the darkest of times.
